Rachel Cartwright founded The Keiki Kohola project in 1997. Prior to joining the research community, Rachel spent many happy years working as a naturalist on several different boats in Lahaina Harbor.
Today she teaches Mrine Biology, Biostatistics and Environmental Science at California State University Channel Islands, Camarillo, California.
She holds a Master's degree in Conservation Biology and obtained her PhD, which is also Conservation Biology, in 2005.

Captain Terence Mangold, also started his maritime career in Lahaina Harbor, driving various whale watching boats.
Today Capt Terry runs photo safari cruises in Prince William Sound, Alaska and holds his 500 ton licence.

Capt Amy Venema is another veteran of Lahaina Harbor, she worked as a naturalist on many different whale watching boats .
Today Amy works as a captain for Ultimate Rafting Maui in the wintertimes and in the summers she joins American Safari Cruises as their lead naturalist.
